Abstract Based on the largest highway tunnel with two holes and eight lanes in China, the contents, technique and method of the stress monitoring of the support system are described. The tunnel stresses during different construction procedures are monitored and analyzed. The results show that:(1) The construction of the up-stage in the right hole, the down-stage in the left hole and the up-stage of the core soil are the main points changing the stress distribution of the support system greatly. (2) The enclosure of lining and using of the cross anchor are effective methods to improve the performance of lining and restrain the deformation of the tunnel. Therefore,it is important to construct the inverted arch and enclose the lining. The results can be adopted in the design, construction and research of similar tunnels.
