Abstract The simulation methodology of tunnel construction with shield moving forward by 3-D non-linear finite element method is proposed. A transferring stiffness method is put forward to imitate moving-forward shield process and the weighted stiffness is used to modify Goodman element for the case of two types of materials. An example of underground project is studied and the laws of displacements of ground surface and disturbance to the soil are analyzed. It is proved that the shield going-forward will heavily disturb the soil and induce upheaval and settlement of ground.
