Abstract Proceeding from the fact that surrounding rock-support system of underground excavation is of two properties,i.e. the properties of geology and mechanics and the properties of system,it is clarified that surrounding rock-support system is an open complex giant system (OCGS). The only feasible and effective way to treat an OCGS up to now is the meta-synthesis from the qualitative to the quantitative point of view,and the scientific semi-analytic method provides a solid theoretical foundation for underground excavation support design.
