Abstract Based on the characteristics of sand ground improved by vacuum preloading,a modified method for three-dimensional(3D) finite element(FE) analysis of the ground is presented. The method uses the superposed elements in replace of the different nodes of displacements and pore pressures associated with homogenized ground surface, and thus the element numbers of nodal displacements and pore pressures can be reduced and effectively determined. As a result, computer memory resources can be significantly saved, and ill-conditioned stiffness matrix can be properly addressed.
