Abstract:The stiffness of buildings was ignored in conventional analysis in calculating the influence of tunnelling on adjacent buildings. In this research, the field monitoring was carried out on both surface settlement and building deformation along a construction section of Metro Line 2 in Wuhan. The monitored results are very different from the predicted ones ignoring the building stiffness, which indicate a significant influence of building stiffness on its deformation. Numerical simulation considering the small strain stiffness in the soil constitutive model was then carried out. The results of the simulation revealed the considerable influence of building stiffness not only on the surface settlement but also on the sub-surface soil deformation. The mechanism of this complex tunnelling- soil-building interaction is discussed. The results demonstrate the importance of considering building stiffness when analyzing the influence of tunnelling on buildings and piles.
