| Analysis of the upper-bound limit of stability of the tunnel face considering the effect of pipe shed support |

Abstract The pipe shed support demonstrates remarkable effectiveness in enhancing tunnel stability. The conventional geometric parameter recursion method for the elliptical cone failure mode limits computing efficiency.
Therefore, based on ensuring the similarity of projected shapes for all sliding blocks, this study accurately calculated the energy dissipation rate by reasonably considering the cross-sectional area, effective number, and elevation angle of pipe shed crossing the slip surface. The stability safety factor (Fs) was formulated through a combination of the upper-bound limit analysis and the strength reduction method, followed by its solution via nonlinear optimization.
Comparative analysis against model tests, existing theoretical solutions, and engineering cases confirmed the validity of the proposed method and elucidated the influence of the pipe shed elevation angle on Fs. The results reveal that the synergistic interaction between the shear resistance of pipe sheds and frictional forces along slip surfaces reduces the required shear strength of surrounding rock for limit equilibrium, thereby increasing the Fs. The Fs exhibits a non-linear decay trend with increasing elevation angle of the pipe shed, which is more sensitive to such changes. The results of this study contribute to refining the stability evaluation system for tunnel faces under pipe shed support.
