Abstract The relat ion s are determ ined system at ically betw een the bu rst tendency and w ater con ten t, the
w ater con ten t and po ro sity in coal seam by experim en t. It is found that the bu rst tendency of coal seam
depends inversely on the w ater con ten t, and it is mo st sen sit ive in o riginal w ater con ten t. The satu rated
w ater con ten t in coal seam depends on po ro sity in coal. A reliab le quan t itat ive basis is p rovided fo r
p reven t ing rockbu rst in coalm ine by u sing w ater in ject ion m ethod.
