Abstract A mesoscopic model is presented to describe the mechanisms of deformation and failure for brittle rocks. In the loading process , the mechanical states of rocks are much related to microcracks. In the model , the macro2 scopic deformation of rocks is divided into three part s including deformation of rock media , deformation induced by the closure and sliding of micocracks , and deformation induced by the formation of kinked cracks. The closure , sliding and growth of microcracks of rocks are analyzed and the calculation formulae of each part are established. The above deformations are summed to obtain the st ress2st rain curves in the loading process. Compared with test2 ing data , it is shown that the laws of st ress2st rain relationship obtained by two different methods are similar.
