Abstract Several groups of scraping tests for rock by single insert are made. The conical and chisel inserts and dolomite，limestone，sandstone，shale are involved in the tests. The tests are performed by Rock Bit Lab of South- west Petroleum Institute. The principle of tests，the method of geometric modeling，which is important for computer simulation research on rock-bit penetrating procedure，and the interpretation of scraping test data are all presented. Some related problems are also discussed.
