Abstract In the application of stochastic medium theory，it is assumed that ground movement process is of the property of stochastic process，and the ground movement and deformation due to tunnel excavation can be calculated. In the application of elasto-plastic medium theory，the rock and soil are assumed to be elasto-plastic medium, and the stress change due to tunnel excavation can be calculated，too. The comparison between the field measurements and the calculated results shows the validity of the proposed method.
