Abstract It is a kind of conventional method to analyse the structural homogeneity of rock mass according to statistical data of discontinuity orientation. However，if the discontinuity orientation is similar in an area，this method should not be used to evaluate homogeneity of structural populations. So a new method is put forward to analyse the structural homogeneity of rock mass based on discontinuity density，and it is successfully applied to analysis on the structural homogeneity of discontinuities for sideslip surface in a large hydropower project in Southwest China.
