Abstract Finite element method of lines (FEMOL) is combined with back-analysis method for geo-engineering problem. The back analysis method based on FEMOL is put forward for the first time in this paper，which not only sheds new lights on the more effective application of FEMOL，but also enriches the techniques of back analysis. This method is verified in a practical engineering example with satisfactory results.
