Abstract Based on the condition of static equilibrium in the sliding soil，the expression of passive earth pressure with rigid retaining wall rotating around wall top (RT) for cohesionless soils is established. The comparisons are made among the presented formula，the Coulomb formula and some experimental observations. It is demonstrated that the presented formula can well reflect the nonlinear distribution of passive earth pressure. The magnitude of the resultant earth pressures for the movement mode of RT of rigid retaining wall is approximately equal to that by the Coulomb theory，and the action points of the resultant earth pressures lie around 0.27 times of the height of rigid retaining wall.
