Abstract Based on the mining with pillar supporting in the mined-out area,a rheological mechanical model of pillars and roof plate system for mined-out area is established, which brings out the displacement control function of the roof stratum supported by pillars under rheological effect;and the fracture stages in roof stratum are analyzed regarding to the time-dependent behavior. The result indicates that the roof stratum supported by pillars in the mined-out area will gradually fail and till collapse by taking into account of the rheological feature of pillars. Based on a case study, the proposed mechanical model could be used to estimate the stable time of the roof stratum in pillar-roof system of mined-out area by considering the rheological behavior of pillars.
