Abstract Firstly,the three-dimensional network simulation technique is used to establish the model of randomly distributed discontinuities in the statistical homogeneity zone of rock mass structure. The structure of jointed rock mass is regenerated on the screen of computer. Then,the fractal dimension of three-dimensional jointed rock mass is calculated by using fractal theory. The three-directional scanlines which are parallel to x,y and z axes respectively are set in the three-dimensional network model of jointed rock mass to obtain the rock quality designation(RQD). By analyzing the data of fractal dimension and RQD,it is found that the RQD decreases with the increase in the fractal dimension,which have a good linear relationship. The formulae of fractal dimension and RQD under different thresholds of three-dimensional jointed rock mass are deduced. Based on the slope of the linear relationship curve between fractal dimension and RQD,the most reasonable threshold is determined.
