Abstract With rapid construction of hydropower stations and deep underground projects under high water pressure, there are more and more seepage failure risks in these projects. As a result, the in-situ high pressure permeability must be tested and the high pressure permeability properties and seepage stability of rock masses must be systematically and thoroughly studied. In this work, according to the revealed phenomenon in field and the water-rock interactions, the seepage failure mechanisms and failure modes of fractured rock masses under high water pressure are discussed. In addition, based on high pressure packer tests or high pressure permeability tests of several hydropower sataions under high water head, the permeability properties such as hydraulic fracturing, seepage deformation, erosion resistance and long-term seepage stability are studied. The results indicate that:(1) The permeability properties of fractured rock masses can be remarkably changed by high water pressure. (2) The changes of permeability properties are quite correlative with water pressure, supporting environment of stress and fracture fillings.
