Abstract The seismic damage and seismic performance in underground engineering is a hot spot of research home and abroad. Due to the constraints of surrounding rock and soil, there is a big difference in the dynamic characteristics between the underground structures and ground constructions under earthquake. Because of the special deformation characteristics of underground structures,a lot of research have been carried out on theoretical and experimental study of seismic response. Furthermore, the damage characteristics and failure mechanism of underground structures have been analyzed, the current achievements of seismic performance evaluation of underground structures have been summarized, and important issues have been pointed out. The life cycle seismic response and performance evaluation indexes of underground engineering should be emphasized, especially the life cycle damage mechanism and the seismic performance design of underground engineering constructed in the strong earthquake zone.
