Abstract In order to compare the dynamic mechanical response and energy evolution laws of tuff and limestone, the uniaxial compressive loading tests with strain rate varying from 40 s－1 to 200 s－1 on the two rocks were carried out using the 50 mm diameter split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) system, and the test phenomena were reasonably interpreted from the microscopic and mesoscopic perspective by combining with X-ray diffraction and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) tests. Based on the statistical damage theory of Weibull distribution, the damage differences between tuff and limestone under different strain rates are analyzed. The results show that with the increase of strain rate, the dynamic compressive strength, energy absorption rate and energy consumption density of the two rocks increase, existing a significant strain rate effect. Tuff contains high-hardness quartz and feldspar minerals, and its dynamic compressive strength is higher than that of limestone. In addition, tuff has a complex mineral composition and poor internal pore connectivity, resulting in higher energy absorption rates and energy consumption density. In contrast, limestone is primarily composed of softer calcite minerals and has better pore connectivity, exhibiting greater strain rate sensitivity but lower damage levels.
