| Influence of roughness on shear behavior of red sandstone joint infilling with red clay |

Abstract The shear behavior of naturally-infilled rock joints is critical to the stability evaluation of engineering rock masses. This study investigates the effect of roughness on the shear behavior of infilled red-sandstone joints. Three Barton standard profiles are fabricated on natural red sandstone by a CNC engraving technique, and a series of direct shear tests are performed under normal stresses ranging from 0.50 to 1.50 MPa to examine the strength and failure mechanism. The results show that: (1) the shear stress–displacement curves can be divided into an elastic stage, a plastic (hardening) stage, and a slip stage. Increase of roughness transforms the stress-displacement response from a non-peak type to a clear peak-type with a more pronounced stress drop, indicating a brittle behavior at failure. (2) Increasing normal stress leads to a marked increase of the shear strength of infilled joints. When the normal stress rises from 0.50 to 1.50 MPa, the strength increases by 271%, 298%, and 191% for low, medium, and high roughness joints, respectively. The shear strength of infilled joints does not invariably increase with increasing roughness and depends on both joint morphology and asperity characteristic. (3) The presence of infilling material significantly modifies the shear mechanism, and the failure mode gradually shifts from sliding to asperity shearing as roughness and normal stress increase. (4) Binary image–based damage analysis of the joint surface indicates that the damage coefficient of the high-roughness joint is 3.459% under normal stress of 1.50 MPa, which is markedly higher than those of the low- and medium-roughness joints (0.507% and 0.765%). Damage and abrasion zones concentrate near asperity summits. Increasing normal stress induces stress concentration, enlarges the abrasion area, and significantly intensifies surface damage.
