Abstract Based on the experiments and the numerical simulations of the fracture and instability of impact coal mass, the deformation and break of coal mass are divided into 3 stages, namely, elastic stage, nonlinear stage and mutation stage. The dilatation process of coal mass is depicted by 3 characteristic quantities, namely, volume compression, steady dilatation and dilatation mutation. The dilatation model of rock burst is established. Dilatancy theory explains the stability and mutation of premonitory information of rock burst. It is the theoretical basis for identification of premonitory information of rock burst. The software RFPA is used to validate the relation between dilatation mutation and premonitory information of acoustic emission.
