Abstract The rules of coal and rock movement,the characteristics of deformation and failure of coal,and the major principal stress in the process of top-coal caving in steep thick seam are analyzed by using UDEC2D. The characteristics of stress and movement of support structure at top-coal caving face are investigated by using FLAC3D. The simulation results agree with the field conditions.
