Abstract:The evolutions of long-term settlements of tunnels in soft clays are essential to the safety of the urban tunnels and the surrounding buildings. A closed visco-clatic rheological form coupled with Terzaghi's consolidation theory is employed to predict the long-term surface settlements of tunnels. Compared with the short-term surface settlements, the long-term setlements are rather significant and developed in a quite long duration. The satisfactory agreement between observed and predicted long-term settlements indicates that the adopted analytical method is a reasonable and convenient way to estimate the development of long-term settlements of tunnels with time.
