Abstract Based on energy balance equation of structural dynamics，the seismic energy response of high arch dam can be calculated by using energy analysis method. Xiaowan hydropower project is taken as an example. The energy response curve shows that the energy value alters in echelon. The relations between energy judging indicator and fetched number of dominance modes can suggest that 10 or more dominance modes must be fetched on dynamic analysis of the arch dam.
