Abstract:Based on the unified strength theory, the ultimate equilibrium stress equation under plane strain state is deduced and introduced into the Rankine earth pressure theory. Then the coefficients of active and passive earth pressure and the calculation formulas of earth pressure based on the unified strength theory are proposed. It is shown that the formula of Rankine earth pressure based on the Mohr-Coulomb strength theory is a particular case of the presented formulas. The earth pressure along the depth in a practical project is calculated with different weight coefficients which reflect the influence of intermediate principal stress, and the results prove that calculation results of earth pressure considering intermediate principal stress are closer to the practical situation than those without considering intermediate principal stress.
