Abstract:Systematical testing studies on 8 kinds of materials for a high embankment dam whose maximum height is 258 m are performed. Stress-strain-strength characteristics of them in high stress conditions are analyzed through large triaxial tests. The results show that cohesion c of embankment materials does exist,which contradicts the routine idea c = 0. The value of c is suggested for this project. And the results show that shear strength characteristics are obviously nonlinear and deformation properties are harmonious. According to original physical meaning of Duncan-Chang model,an improved method for determining strength parameters is introduced,which involves a and b. Different figures are drawn in different axis strains a,and a or initial modulus Ei is obtained according to the possible minimum value of a,whereas b is gained from a bigger range of a. Since basic physical meaning of a and b are thoroughly different,the improved method overcomes the defect of routine method which obtains the two parameters on the same line. According to different coordinate scales,different parameters including a and b,and corresponding Ei,k,n and Rf of Duncan-Chang model are gained. Suggested parameters are proposed in comparison with constitutive parameters by routine method and they are proved to be reliable by data fitting.
