Abstract:The model tests using the rock similar materials were carried out to study the effect of height-diameter ratios and characteristics of the filled joints. The uniaxial compression and shear tests were performed with three types of specimens including ones without joints, ones with cruciform joints and ones with intersecting parallels joints. The failure modes of the three types of specimens are similar in general trends with X-shaped conjugated plane or single plane of shear failure under compression and shear tests. Under the uniaxial compression, the performance of intact specimen is clearly affected by its size, and the strength of jointed one is significantly affected by the weakening of the structure depending on the joint density and the filling materials. The elastic modulus E and the cohesion c have no significant difference for the two kinds of jointed specimens, while the internal friction angles are obviously affected by the joints and their fillings.
